An experienced trainer once said, “the heaviest weight in the gym is the front door”. This isn’t meant to be taken literally- unless your gym actually has the heaviest door ever, but it is true in a sense. Oftentimes the hardest part of anything is just getting started. The gym can be an intimidating place, especially for females, so if you’ve ever felt hesitant, unsure or anxious about what to do at the gym, this article will help you feel confident during your next workout.
Here are 3 tips to help you feel more confident in the gym as a female:
1) Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Even experienced gym-goers sometimes need help figuring out how to use a piece of equipment. Most gym owners and employees are happy to help you figure something out- you just need to ask. In our experience, gym owners greatly appreciate you using their equipment properly, so asking for help is not a nuisance in any way. Whether it’s adjusting a squat rack, choosing the correct barbell or asking someone to spot you, don’t hesitate to ask for help. We were all beginners at one point- which leads us to the next tip:
2) “A master is a beginner who keeps beginning.”
Everyone who is successful at something was once a beginner. The path to progress is paved with consistency. The more you go to the gym, the more confident you will feel over time. Think about yourself- what is your career? Were you amazing at it when you first started? Probably not, but over time you learned and got better. The same logic applies to the gym. If you need a little extra boost with your progress, read on for the next tip:
3) Follow a training program!
Following a training program has many benefits. Having a program written for you removes the mental load of exercise selection- an area where we often see novices getting stuck. Your trainer/coach will design a program for you- meaning they will tell you exactly what to do. They will assign exercises, sets, reps and approximate working intensity for you. It’s a bit like making a recipe- all you have to do is show up to the gym and follow the instructions.
Implementing these simple tips can make a huge difference in your gym experience, so we hope this article will help you feel more confident the next time you workout.
